Colonoscopy: Why It Is Done and How to Prepare
A colonoscopy is an examination of the inside of the large bowel (colon and rectum) using a thin, flexible tube with a camera. It allows the doctor to look for causes of symptoms and to find and remove polyps during the same procedure.
Why is a colonoscopy done?
Common reasons include:
- Follow-up of a positive stool screening test (FIT)
- Rectal bleeding
- A lasting change in bowel habits
- Surveillance after previous polyps
- A family history of colorectal cancer or polyps

Preparing for a colonoscopy
The bowel must be empty for a clear view. You will receive written instructions for a special diet and a bowel preparation drink to take before the procedure, following the timing in your instructions. Because sedation is usually given, you will need someone to accompany you home.
After the procedure
Bloating and gas are common for a few hours. Your doctor will explain the findings and, if polyps were removed, when you can expect the results.
