What is the Thyroid Center?
VM Med’s Thyroid Centre offers patients excellent and timely care. Our team supports every aspect of our patients’ thyroid health throughout the course of their lives. We offer a welcoming environment and specialized counselling and treatments on a wide range of issues.
Although most thyroid nodules are benign, some are cancerous. This is why it is important to have all neck lumps (or nodules) evaluated by a thyroid specialist as soon as possible. Our specialists will evaluate the nodule and propose a plan of action that prioritizes your health and comfort throughout the entire process.

What is a thyroid gland?
Your thyroid is one of the endocrine glands which make hormones to regulate physiological functions in your body. The thyroid gland manufactures thyroid hormone, which regulates the rate at which your body carries on its necessary functions. Other endocrine glands are: the pituitary, the adrenal glands, the parathyroid glands, the testes and the ovaries.
The thyroid gland is located in the middle of the lower neck, below the larynx (voice box) and just above your clavicle (collarbone). It is shaped like a "bowtie", having two halves (lobes), a right lobe and a left lobe joined by an "isthmus": (see diagram below) you can rarely feel a normal thyroid gland.

What can a patient expect?
At the VM Med Thyroid Center, patients can expect timely, expert care without the need for a referral. Simply complete our online form, and our patient affairs coordinator will contact you during business hours. All required exams are available on site, and results are typically provided within seven to ten business days. Although most thyroid nodules are benign, each one deserves careful and thorough evaluation to ensure it is not cancerous.
When you arrive, you’ll be welcomed at reception and asked to fill out a short intake form. From there, you’ll be guided to the physician consultation area, where you’ll check in with our coordinator until your doctor is ready to see you. During your consultation, your physician will review your medical history, blood work, and perform a neck exam and thyroid ultrasound. If the ultrasound reveals a nodule that looks suspicious, a biopsy is usually performed the same day. Your doctor will take the time to explain your results, answer your questions, and discuss possible next steps in detail.
